It is 6:50am and I am about to run out the door to catch a train to Bern, but I did want to write another update before my weekend travels --- but it will have to be quick.
Not too much more to report, however. On Tuesday, I went to the WHO library orientation and met with my supervisor, Dr. Raymond Hutubessy, in the afternoon. We discussed preliminary ideas for my research and he gave me a bunch of background reading on previous work in the "broader economic impact of vaccines" (BEIV) area, as well as reading/links for documents for the Immunization and Vaccines in Implementation Research (IVIR) advisory committee meeting that he is running on September 25-26, which I will be attending. Raymond also took me with him to a working lunch seminar on Wednesday to discuss the research priority list for implementation research that will be discussed at the meeting. All the background reading is pretty much all the work that I did this week. We are meeting again on Monday to discuss more specifics.
I also met with our VIEW liaisons from Hopkins at WHO --- Dr. Kate O'Brien and Dr. Thomas Cherian. It is good to have them in our corner ensuring that our internships are smooth and productive. And they are both amazingly smart and accomplished --- plus Dr. Cherian gave me some information about how I might potentially be able to travel with Raymond to Dar es Salaam for a workshop. Fingers crossed!
In other very quick news, I went to seminars on neglected tropical diseases and the malaria vaccine this week. And I went out for "UN Drinks" on Thursday where all the UN agency interns get together --- hence staying out a bit too late on a work night and being too tired last night to write (and last night I also went out to dinner with the other VIEW interns and got to know them all better --- again, this would be Jill, Jennifer, and Victor. Victor took a picture of all of us so I will post that when he sends it out so you can see who I'm talking about.)
Alright, time to zip up my backpack and head out to the bus to the train station!
Jealous of all your adventures, but I hope you're having a lot of fun!!
